Robert Dilts – A Pioneer in the Development of NLP, Leadership and Generative Growth
For nearly five decades, Robert Dilts has stood as one of the most influential and creative figures in the field of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). From its early formation in 1975 through to the emergence of Generative Change and Success Factor Modelling, Robert’s work has been foundational — shaping how individuals, teams, and organisations grow, evolve, and flourish.
As a close collaborator with NLP’s founders John Grinder and Richard Bandler, and a direct student of both Milton H. Erickson and Gregory Bateson, Robert brought a depth of insight and rigour to the application of NLP across education, health, business, and leadership. His pioneering work on Strategies and Belief Systems laid the groundwork for what is now referred to as Systemic NLP — a holistic and deeply ecological approach to behavioural change and personal transformation.
Robert’s influence can be seen in an extraordinary range of models and tools that have become standard in the NLP and coaching worlds: Sleight of Mouth Patterns, Neuro-Logical Levels, the Belief Change Cycle, Generative NLP, and Re-imprinting — to name just a few. His contribution was formally recognised in 2018 with the Lifetime Contribution Award from the Association for NLP (ANLP).

An accomplished author, Robert’s bibliography spans more than 20 books, each a landmark in its own right. From Changing Belief Systems with NLP and Visionary Leadership Skills to Sleight of Mouth and The Hero’s Journey (with Dr Stephen Gilligan), Robert has consistently provided practical, powerful frameworks for transformation. His more recent work in Success Factor Modelling™ distils the behaviours, values and strategies of world-class entrepreneurs and leaders, providing a blueprint for success in both personal and organisational contexts.
Robert’s voice has reached global audiences, delivering keynote presentations and transformational training with organisations including Apple, IBM, Microsoft, Lucasfilm, The World Bank, and Harvard University. His consultancy work has supported change across sectors — from corporate giants such as Fiat and Hewlett-Packard, to health institutions, academic bodies, and government agencies.
A Tireless Innovator
A tireless innovator, Robert has co-founded a number of key institutions including NLP University (with Judith DeLozier), the Institute for Advanced Studies in Health (IASH), and the International Association for Generative Change (IAGC). He also co-founded the Dilts Strategy Group with his late brother, John Dilts — a platform dedicated to delivering scalable, sustainable growth for organisations through the Success Factor Modelling™ methodology.
Robert’s technological vision is equally impressive. Through ventures like Behavioural Engineering and Mind Master, he has fused NLP with cutting-edge technology, biofeedback, and educational software — always with the aim of empowering people to reach their fullest potential.
Today, Robert continues to lead global conversations in coaching, leadership, and human potential.
