For Lasting Personal Change – Focus On One Thing

In a world competing relentlessly for our attention, it’s little wonder that real, lasting personal change can feel just out of reach. Yet sustainable transformation rarely comes from doing more. It comes from doing less — with clarity, focus, and intention.

For Lasting Personal Change – Focus On One Thing

In a world that constantly pulls our attention in multiple directions, it’s no surprise that meaningful and lasting personal change often feels elusive. Yet the path to sustainable transformation is often not about doing more—but doing less, more intentionally.

Tony Nutley, founder of the UK College of Personal Development (UKCPD), reminds us time and time again: clarity and focus are foundational. So, what if the real key to lasting personal change was to focus on just one thing?

Why Focus Matters

Change, especially the kind that sticks, doesn’t come from chaotic multitasking or sporadic goal setting. It comes from concentrated energy. The Generative Coaching Cycle™, used across UKCPD’s coaching models, teaches that sustainable change flows through a process of direction, insight, action, and reflection. That begins with focus—specifically, focusing on what truly matters to you.

In coaching and NLP, we refer to this as establishing a “well-formed outcome”—something specific, meaningful, and motivating. The WHAT Coaching Method™ exemplifies this beautifully. By asking, “What do you want?” and “What will this do for you?” clients start to peel away the noise and uncover their one thing—their core outcome.

Identity and Purpose: Anchors of Change

Lasting change isn’t about external actions alone—it’s about aligning those actions with your sense of identity. In the Who Are You? coaching exercise from UKCPD, clients are encouraged to reflect deeply on their purpose, their values, and their identity. One powerful question in that process: “What new you do you want?”. This helps ensure that the one thing you’re focusing on is aligned with who you are becoming—not just who you’ve been.

As Tony often puts it, “That one thing you commit to doing today can—yes, it really can—improve all your tomorrows”.

Overcoming the Barriers: Limiting Beliefs

Often, it’s not the external world that blocks change—it’s internal beliefs. The Resolving Limiting Beliefs process shows us how closely tied beliefs are to identity. Limiting beliefs like “I’m not good enough” or “I can’t stick with things” subtly sabotage progress. The remedy? Begin with a clear outcome, then explore what beliefs need to be let go or reframed to support it.

This is where NLP really shines—by using models and tools to gently but powerfully shift these internal blocks so that they no longer hinder our focus or motivation.

The Power of Simplicity: APROCESS and Imagineering

Both the APROCESS Outcome Model and Disney’s Imagineering Model—used within UKCPD’s Coach and NLP training framework—emphasize simplicity and sequential planning. APROCESS asks, “What do I really want?” and “What resources do I need to make it happen?”. Imagineering lets us dream freely, plan practically, and critique wisely.

But the magic happens when these models are applied to just one goal at a time. That’s when momentum builds, and distractions fall away.

Final Thoughts: The One Thing, The Big Shift

The secret to lasting personal change isn’t about making massive shifts all at once. It’s about asking yourself: What is the one change that, if I made it, would create a ripple effect in every area of my life?

Once you find it—nurture it, focus on it, protect it from distraction, and build your daily routines around it. Then, as Tony Nutley often says, “Intention and clear direction are the keys to life satisfaction”.

So go ahead, choose your one thing. Commit to it. Then watch everything begin to change.
