Jim Rohn

Jim Rohn (born Emanuel James Rohn on September 17, 1930 in Yakima, Washington; died December 5, 2009) was an American entrepreneur, bestselling author, and one of the most influential pioneers in the modern personal development and self-improvement movement. Over a speaking and writing career spanning more than four decades, Rohn helped shape how millions worldwide understand success, personal leadership, achievement, and the mindset required to live a fulfilling life.

Rohn grew up on a modest farm in Idaho, where early responsibilities instilled a strong work ethic and grounded outlook. After briefly attending college, he left formal education to enter the workforce and eventually became a self-made millionaire by age 31 through business and disciplined personal growth practices. A mentor-mentee relationship with entrepreneur John Earl Shoaff in the 1950s proved pivotal, transforming Rohn’s worldview and catalysing his transition into leadership and personal development.

Contributions to Personal Development

Jim Rohn’s philosophy centred on the idea that personal development is the foundation of success. He taught that individuals must work on themselves first — building discipline, habits, clarity of purpose, and emotional intelligence — before they can effectively pursue goals in business, relationships, health, and wealth. His practical, storytelling-driven style made complex concepts accessible, emphasizing self-responsibility, lifelong learning, goal-setting, and consistent action. Unlike quick-fix motivational truisms, Rohn’s material offered structured life strategies that resonated deeply across generations.

Outstanding Books and Recordings

Rohn authored and recorded numerous books, audio programs, and video trainings that became staples in the self-improvement world:

  • 7 Strategies for Wealth & Happiness – One of his most celebrated works, this book distils key principles for building a successful, fulfilling life through mindset, discipline, and personal responsibility.

  • My Philosophy for Successful Living – A reflective exploration of Rohn’s core ideas about success, financial literacy, and life design.

  • The Art of Exceptional Living – Combines practical advice, mindset cues, and philosophical insights aimed at elevating everyday life.

  • The Seasons of Life, The Power of Ambition, Five Major Pieces to the Life Puzzle, and Twelve Pillars of Success (co-authored with Chris Widener) add depth and variety to his body of work, blending written wisdom with motivational narratives.

In addition to written works, Rohn’s audio and video recordings — including seminar recordings and lesson series — have been widely distributed, used by trainers, coaches, and corporate leaders as foundational learning material. His clear, engaging voice and articulation of universal life principles made these recordings enduring tools for self-development.

Influence and Legacy

Rohn’s impact extends far beyond his own audiences. He directly mentored and influenced a generation of world-renowned personal development leaders, including Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and T. Harv Eker — each of whom credits Rohn’s principles with shaping their own approaches to coaching, leadership, and growth. His teachings laid the groundwork for modern motivational speaking and life-strategy coaching, influencing millions worldwide.

Rohn received the National Speakers Association CPAE Award for speaking excellence in 1985, recognizing his mastery of idea delivery and transformational influence. Though he passed away in 2009, his philosophies remain central in leadership curricula, coaching programmes, and personal development libraries around the world — a testament to the enduring power of his message that success begins within.

Tony Nutley, the CEO and Founder of the UK College of Personal Development credits Jim Rohn as one of the key people (the second being Robert Dilts) that mentored and influenced in the decision and process of building UKCPD.
