January as a Time to Reset Your Life

January is often seen as a blank page – a symbolic new beginning. But what if we made that more than symbolic? What if January became a genuine reset – a purposeful moment to reflect, reset, and realign with what truly matters?

January as a Time to Reset Your Life

January is often seen as a blank page – a symbolic new beginning. But what if we made that more than symbolic? What if January became a genuine reset – a purposeful moment to reflect, reset, and realign with what truly matters?

Why January Matters

After the festive pause and the turning of the calendar, January offers a natural threshold – a moment between what has been and what could be. As Tony Nutley often encourages, “Intention and clear direction are the keys to life satisfaction”. January is an invitation to set that intention with clarity.

But real change requires more than resolutions. It needs reflection, awareness, and of course – taking action! (have you joined the Kickstart 2026 programme?)

Step 1: Reflect on Who You Are

Start with the foundational question Tony invites us to ask in the “Who Are You?” exercise:

“Can you accept, right now, that you really do have a purpose?”

This isn’t about surface-level goals, but identity. As Tony teaches, lasting change often begins at the level of identity – not behaviour. Asking “Who are you really?” can open a powerful inquiry into values, purpose, and your desired future self.

Step 2: Clear the Clutter – Especially in the Mind

Many of us carry limiting beliefs from the previous year (or longer). The start of a new year is the perfect time to acknowledge and let go. UKCPD’s Resolving Limiting Beliefs process offers a powerful approach:

  1. Identify the limiting beliefs that surface when you think about your goals.

  2. Thank these beliefs for trying to protect you.

  3. Replace them with empowering beliefs that reflect your current identity and future vision.

This emotional housekeeping frees up space for what you do want.

Step 3: Set Outcomes – Not Just Goals

The “WHAT Coaching Method™” invites us to go beyond surface-level goals and ask:

  • What do you want?

  • What will this do for you? (The goal beyond the goal)

  • What is the first step?

By focusing on what rather than how or why, we stay connected to vision and possibility. Remember, as the Generative Coaching Cycle™ outlines, change unfolds in stages – from discomfort to insight to action. Let January be the spark that begins this cycle.

Step 4: Imagine the Future – Then Make It Real

The Imagineering model, inspired by Walt Disney and used by UKCPD, invites us to consciously separate the dreamer, the realist, and the critic:

  • Dreamer: What’s the best possible version of your 2025?

  • Realist: What resources, steps, and timeframes are needed?

  • Critic: What could go wrong, and how will you adapt?

Rather than blend these voices, give each one time and space – it’s how you build sustainable plans from dreams.

Step 5: Anchor It with Daily Practice

Tony often talks about small steps creating big shifts. Simple habits – journaling, walking, breathing fresh air, positive self-talk – are powerful tools. He reminds us:

“Get out of the house, get fresh air, get the wind in your face. Even the rain washes away the gloop… It makes you feel alive”.

It’s in these daily rituals that your January reset takes root.

This Is Your Time

As the old saying goes, “If you want new results, you need new actions.” But before action, comes clarity. January is more than a resolution-making month. It’s a chance to come home to yourself — to update your beliefs, revisit your values, and set a vision that excites your soul.

As Tony Nutley says, “That one thing you commit to doing today can—yes, it really can—improve all your tomorrows”.

So… what’s your one thing today?
