Personal Reflections On Celebrating 50 Years of NLP

As many of you know, we have been Celebrating 50 Years of NLP, 3 days of events hosted at NLPU, Santa Cruz by Robert Dilts and Judith Delozier – and we’ve been sharing lots of videos and resources on the UKCPD platform as we are Celebrating 50 Years of NLP. I thought it might be fitting to share something a little more personal—my own reflections on this milestone, and why I’ve been so committed to NLP for nearly 30 years.

The College itself has been around for 26 years in one form or another. We’ve changed names a few times over the years—some of you may not know that originally, we were called the New Life Programme, and later the Institute of Human Achievement. Eventually, and somewhat strangely — I had a dream that inspired a new name—one that really captured the breadth of what we wanted to achieve. The UK College of Personal Development.

Although I first came to NLP from a leadership and management perspective, I’ve always had a passion for personal development, and the early Human Potential movement. In my early days I was influenced by people like Jim Rohn and Brian Tracy, and those ideas still shape much of my thinking today.

So, as we celebrate this 50-year landmark, I want to share two core reasons why I remain such an enthusiast for NLP.

1. Freedom

The word that springs to mind when I think about NLP is freedom—personal freedom and professional freedom – What we often call “Personal Agency” – !

For me, freedom means not being afraid anymore. Not being afraid to make mistakes, to try new things, to figure things out for yourself. One of the key NLP Presuppositions—there is no failure, only feedback—literally changed my life.

I often tell this story: I was on a training course about 30 years ago, still working in leadership and management. To be honest, I wasn’t paying much attention—I’d had a few drinks the night before—but as I listened, something suddenly clicked. Those simple NLP Presuppositions—there is no failure, only feedback, if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always had, and “the Meaning of Your Communication is the Response You Get.”—all connected in my mind.

At that moment, I thought: if these are true, then I’m unstoppable. Mistakes just become learning opportunities, and that was the beginning of developing my own philosophy of success, which in turn, is now one of the main topics or themes I speak about.

From there, the other NLP tools built on that foundation: the communication model, well-formed outcomes, logical levels, the meta-model—all of these provided me with tools to think differently about the past, but even more importantly, to create new ways of thinking about the future.

For me, NLP gave me the freedom to ask: What do I really want? Who am I really?

Questions that connect to Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey and Robert Dilts’ work on identity and change. Mel also wrote her book on this very subject.

Actually, this is the process I used to develop “The What Coaching Method™” and the “Who Are You™” model, – by just asking questions and noticing what category of question is the most useful to the client – NLP Modelling in action!

2. Opportunity

The second thing NLP has given me is a way of seeing opportunity.

When I work with clients—whether one-to-one coaching or within organisations—I often describe it as flicking the switch from I can’t to I can, I just don’t know how yet.

That shift creates optimism, which creates action, which builds confidence. And over time, you build reference experiences of success and change, which reinforce the belief: yes, I can.

Two more NLP Presuppositions come to mind when I think about how we successfully generate the mindset for seeing opportunity – “It’s not what happens that makes the difference, it’s what you do with it” and “Offering More Choice Expands Possibilities”.

And if individuals or even teams or organisations have a sense or belief that there is no opportunity – or just can’t see it – NLP Belief Change Models are super powerful and I have used these so many times to create real and lasting effect.

That’s why NLP has such a powerful impact in coaching, leadership development, health, and personal growth, it works!

Personal Reflections

This 50th anniversary is not just about NLP—it’s also personal. It’s my birthday week too, so I’ve been reflecting on my own journey: from the first time I encountered NLP, to where I am now in my 60s, still learning, still inspired by both the power and the flexibility of NLP models and tools to enable a new future for both individuals and organisations.

As many of you know, I often talk in the Be Inspired Group about the value of journaling and reflective practice. This week has been just that for me: a chance to look back, take stock, and appreciate how profoundly NLP has shaped my life and the work we do here at UKCPD.

I was delighted to join Robert Dilts recently, to interview and celebrate his 70th birthday—the interview is available on UKCPD TV if you’d like to watch. It’s powerful, insightful, and a great reminder of why this work matters.

Some Closing Thoughts

So, why am I passionate about NLP? Because it creates freedom. Because it opens up opportunity. Because it provides tools for change—not just for individuals, but for organisations and communities too.

I hope you’ve been enjoying the videos we’ve been posting as part of this celebration. Some are shared in the NLP Professional Group for those who want more detail, and others in the general Be Inspired Group for a wider audience.

If you’ve got questions about any of this—or if you’re just curious to chat—I’d love to hear from you. No sales pitch, just a conversation.

Take care of yourselves, enjoy the rest of the summer, and remember—the Be Inspired Group will be back to full power in September along with all our training courses, evening classes and other CPD events.

Keep smiling,
Bye for now.
