Staying Calm and Resourceful When The World Seems a Little Scary
Life can feel like a rollercoaster at times — unpredictable, overwhelming, even a bit scary. Whether it’s the latest news cycle, personal challenges, or just that creeping feeling of uncertainty fuelled by the ten o’clock news, it’s easy to get caught up in things outside of our control. But as we often say at UKCPD, “The map is not the territory” — how we respond, the state we choose to be in, matters far more than the events themselves.
So how do we stay calm and resourceful when everything feels a little much? The answer lies in managing our state, focusing on what we can control, and reconnecting with our goals and deeper purpose.
The Power of State Management
NLP teaches us that our internal state — the combination of thoughts, emotions, and physiology — directly influences our behaviour and results. When we’re in a calm and empowered state, we think more clearly, make better decisions, and act with confidence.
Anchoring is one such tool from NLP that helps you access empowering states on demand. By associating a physical touch (like pressing your thumb and finger together) with a powerful feeling (confidence, calm, focus), you can train your nervous system to shift state almost instantly.
Tony Nutley reminds us: “Your limitations… it’s only your imagination playing tricks, you can do this.” Managing your state is the first step in reminding yourself of what’s true and possible.
Focus on What You Can Do
When the world feels uncertain, it’s easy to fixate on things beyond our control. But as the NLP presupposition says, “People have all the resources they need to succeed and achieve their desired outcomes.” What matters is directing those resources toward what we can influence — our actions, our responses, and our attitude.
This is where outcome thinking shines. Models like the WHAT Coaching Method™ keep us focused on constructive “what” questions instead of spiralling into “why is this happening?” traps. Questions like:
What do I want instead?
What’s the first small step I can take?
What will this change do for me and those I care about?
These shift us from overwhelm to possibility, helping us stay grounded and intentional.
Embracing Stillness and Purpose
Stillness isn’t the absence of action — it’s the presence of clarity. As the “Who Are You?” exercise from UKCPD guides us to ask: “Can you accept, right now, that you have a purpose?” This kind of reflective questioning connects us back to our deeper identity, the kind of life we want to create, and who we want to become.
NLP’s Logical Levels model encourages us to align our actions not just with short-term goals, but with our beliefs, values, identity, and sense of purpose. When these levels are congruent, we gain resilience — like the oak tree with strong roots that can weather any storm.
A Future Worth Moving Toward
Models like APROCESS and Imagineering help us clarify and commit to meaningful goals. Whether you’re exploring your “dreamer” vision or laying out practical steps with your realist self, setting outcomes gives you a reason to get up, take action, and keep moving forward — even when the world feels chaotic.
And remember, as Tony Nutley puts it: “That one thing you commit to doing today can — yes, it really can — improve all your tomorrows”.
Being resourceful doesn’t mean never feeling fear — it means knowing how to return to calm, how to make choices from clarity, and how to stay connected to your bigger “why”.
So today, take a breath. Anchor into your best self. Choose a small, meaningful step. And remember: you have more power than you think — and more support than you know.
