This blog idea evolved in part from some fairly deep and reflective conversations I had recently at an event in London recently, a group of professionals not dissimilar to yourself and I were discussing the current challenges experienced by all of us when it comes to building success and growth, either personal or professional and how it can seem fairly difficult as we live through these somewhat challenging times.
One question that came up was one that I get asked so often is “if there is a recipe or a single skill to develop that will act as a key to unlock the opportunities that lead to a better future?”.
My answer is always the same, not just one skill, but a combination of both practical knowledge and a high level of soft skills that will in my experience give you the edge in planning and enabling both personal and professional growth and success.
Of course you will recognise that I am talking about the key skills needed to succeed in the modern, fast changing and often complex work place and the world in general, these include excellent communication skills, the ability to set goals successfully, the skills to be able to coach co-workers, to be a powerful team member, the ability to problem solve and to show leadership skills at all levels.
Jim Rohn said the following in his famous essay The miracle of Personal Development
“Success is not something you pursue. What you pursue will elude you. It can be like trying to chase butterflies. Success is something you attract and accumulate by the person you become.”
People often ask, what really is Personal Development, and .. how will it help me develop?
Personal development refers to the process of improving oneself in various aspects of life, such as physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
There are many different ideas and approaches to personal development, but some key concepts that are often emphasized include:
Setting and achieving goals: Personal development often involves setting and working towards specific, measurable goals in different areas of life. This helps individuals focus their efforts and make progress towards things that are important to them.
Self-awareness: Personal development often involves becoming more self-aware, or having a better understanding of oneself. This includes understanding one’s strengths, weaknesses, values, and motivations, as well as being aware of how one’s thoughts and emotions influence one’s behaviour.
Personal growth: Personal development is often focused on personal growth, or improving oneself as a person. This can include learning new skills, taking on new challenges, and working on one’s self-esteem and self-worth.
Self-care: self-care is to take care of your physical, emotional and mental well-being, self-care can include things like exercise, healthy eating, getting enough sleep, and managing stress.
Positive Mindset: A positive mindset is also important for personal development, It helps to have a positive attitude towards oneself, others and life in general, Positive thinking can help overcome limiting beliefs and emotions.
