Exploring Logical Levels – Self Study CPD Course

The Logical Levels model, first inspired by the work of Gregory Bateson and later expanded through the lens of NLP by Robert Dilts, is one of the most powerful tools we have for making change happen—both personally and professionally.

In coaching and organisational development, this model offers a clear, structured way to explore how people think, behave, and grow. It gives us a practical map for creating alignment—from environment all the way up to purpose—so that real, lasting transformation can take place.

At its core, the Logical Levels model breaks down human experience into six interconnected layers:

  1. Environment – Where and when we operate. This includes our surroundings and external conditions. It’s where behaviour is observed and measured, but not where change begins.
  2. Behaviour – What we do. These are our actions and reactions within a given environment. Behaviour reflects deeper levels, but changing behaviour alone doesn’t guarantee long-term results.
  3. Capabilities – How we do what we do. This layer involves our skills, strategies, and competencies. It’s about the methods and abilities we draw upon to act in certain ways.
  4. Beliefs and Values – Why we do what we do. This layer uncovers our motivations, convictions, and what we deem important. It profoundly influences our capabilities and behaviour.
  5. Identity – Who we are. This is our sense of self, our roles, and how we perceive ourselves in the world. Identity shapes what we believe is possible and aligns our actions with our deeper sense of purpose.
  6. Purpose / Spirituality – For whom or for what we do it. Often seen as the highest level, this is about our connection to something greater than ourselves—be it a mission, community, or calling.

Understanding these levels enables coaches, leaders, and change agents to diagnose issues more accurately and intervene more effectively. If someone struggles to adopt a new skill, the problem may not lie at the level of capability but may instead stem from limiting beliefs or a misaligned identity.

In practice, working with the Logical Levels allows us to:

This is why the Logical Levels model is so widely used in NLP coaching, leadership development, and cultural transformation work. It brings clarity, depth, and coherence to the process of change.

As Bateson himself suggested, true learning and transformation happen not just through acquiring more information, but by shifting the level at which we operate. When we work at higher levels—such as beliefs, identity, or purpose—we unlock the power to create profound and sustainable change.
